In skateboarding, the person rides a skateboard and performs different types of tricks and difficult maneuvers. It is mainly a recreational activity, but many consider it an action sport. For many people it is also a mode of transportation; however, in certain areas it is illegal to ride a skateboard. The first skateboard can be traced back to the early 1940s, when people used to attach wheels of roller skates to wooden boards or boxes, and ride them. However, skateboarding as it is now probably came about when certain surfers in California were looking for some activity when there were no waves. It is not clear, who made the first skateboard, but many people seem to have come up with the idea during the same time.

The first skateboards were manufactured, when a surf shop in California placed an order with the Chicago Roller Skate Company to make sets of skate wheels, which could be attached to wooden square boards. This is why, skateboarding was initially called sidewalk surfing and the skaters rode the board in a surfing style. This activity became very popular and soon it developed into a separate sport with its own unique maneuvers and tricks.
